KEY POINTS:
An aircraft made a emergency landing at Wellington Airport this morning after pilots noticed a warning indicator light on.
An Air New Zealand spokesman said flight NZ8079 from Wellington to Invercargill had just taken off when the alarm was raised.
It returned to Wellington, landing safely at 9.45am.
The Air Nelson Dash-8 aircraft was being inspected by engineers, and the 19 passengers on board were being offered alternative flights.
It was the second emergency involving a Dash-8 in less than 24 hours.
Palmerston North Airport went into emergency response about noon yesterday 12pm for a Dash-8 after reports of an engine fire.
"The aircraft landed safely, there was no fire in the engine and it taxied to the terminal where they disembarked," said the airport's operations manager, Roy Bodell.
Air New Zealand said the flight, which had departed from Napier and was headed for Wellington, had been diverted to Palmerston North after an engine shutdown and a warning indicator light came on.
