An Auckland Council committee has approved a plan that will transform the city centre over the next 30 years.
The Auckland City Centre master plan gives priority to pedestrians with temporary road closures, tree-lined boulevards and more green spaces.
Auckland councillors debated the plan for over an hour with Dick Quax saying it would force people to live in apartments in the city, which would not be child-friendly and isn't what Aucklanders want.
The Auckland Council decided to push towards more schools being built in the city, and make the emphasis on pedestrians stronger.
The public will have a chance to have their say from September 20.
