KEY POINTS:
A pitbull has been destroyed after it attacked a Napier community worker visiting a client last month, but no decision has been made to charge the owner.
The dog was handed over to Hastings District Council Animal Control, and the incident was still being investigated by the animal control section and police, council community safety manager Malcolm Hart told Hawke's Bay Today.
Mr Hart said it was the most serious dog attack incident he had seen in his job.
The woman spent a week in hospital after she was attacked 10 days ago by the pitbull, unregistered and off its leash.
She was making a routine visit to a client's house in Pakipaki, near Hastings. A woman in the house heard her screams and pulled the dog away, the newspaper reported.
The woman said she had worked in communities without incident during the past eight years.
