KEY POINTS:
A guilty conscience has resulted in a Wellington tagger handing himself in for damaging a velodrome.
The 29-year-old painted a giant pink crocodile head on the concrete velodrome in suburban Hataitai making it too slippery for cyclists to use safely.
But when he saw how his work had impacted on the cycling community, he rang Port Nicholson Poneke Cycling Club to apologise and offered to clean up his mess, the Dominion Post reported today.
Junior club coach Gary Gibson thanked the tagger for his honesty and referred him to the police.
Constable Theo Gommans said it was "admirable" the man turned himself in.
"I won't be quite as hard on him as if I had to track him down myself."
The first-time tagger would be dealt with through the court system and had already agreed to do voluntary work at the velodrome.
