The Civil Aviation Authority has issued advice for pilots on the threat of lasers being shone into cockpits.
The authority said instances of aircraft being "illuminated" were on the rise. While most laser pointers were of relatively low power and unlikely to damage eyes, they could be distracting - particularly during landing and take-off.
It outlined the risks of various laser types and recommended actions to be taken depending on how badly affected pilots were.
These ranged from turning up cockpit lighting to handing over control to a co-pilot or engaging autopilot.
Crews were asked to report all incidents to air traffic controllers who could then warn other aircraft and contact police.
