A $1.6 million home offering wide views of Piha Beach on Auckland's west coast has won top honours for its builder.
The three-level house, made of concrete, steel and glass, took the supreme and residential awards in a trade competition at the weekend.
Its win at the Auckland Registered Master Builders' House of the Year Awards was its second industry accolade in three months. In April the house won an Institute of Architects national award for its architect, Malcolm Taylor.
The three-bedroom house, built by Barton Builders, features a tile-floor internal courtyard, 6m by 6m, which is covered by watertight aluminium louvres.
On the upper level, a 32mm-thick glass "bridge" links the main bedroom with the other two.
"I'm used to working with steel and concrete and having a lot of glass in homes," said Bruce Barton. "I've done complex houses before but not quite this complex. That's why it took us nearly two years to build."
