The sight of "The Frying Dutchman" pie cart on Lincoln Rd has evoked memories of nostalgia for many locals who have fond childhood and adolescent memories of scoffing pies, hot dogs and tasty treats from the site.
The owners of the business, Eddie and Margaret Borgonje, who moved from the Hutt Valley area to Wairarapa a year ago, said they were delighted with the response from hungry punters.
Mr Borgonje, who relocated to New Zealand from his native Holland in 1963, said customers were delighted to see a pie cart back in the area after an absence over recent decades. "This morning a guy came over and he said this area used to be the only spot where you could get hot food on a Friday night," he said. "But we don't do it at nights, no, it's too scary."
Mr Borgonje said he picked up the van about six months ago after he became somewhat disillusioned with retirement. "Since I became a pensioner I didn't know what to do with myself. We went to the Solway Market but it was real quiet so we managed to locate this spot and it's really good."
Mrs Borgonje said she enjoyed the social aspect of the job, meeting different personalities and interacting with people. She said the nostalgia that local people had for the site would hopefully help business.
