Blind British adventurer Mike Newman and his Speed of Sight team have rewritten the Guinness Book of World Records - again.
Newman regained the world land-speed record for blind drivers with an average run of 271km/h over a measured mile on an airfield runway near York. He was driving a BMW M5 sports sedan. His fastest run was 289km/h.
While the M5 is normally electronically limited to 250km/h, BMW produced a one-off car for the record attempt, capable of a top speed of 332km/h . Factory-standard Continental tyres ensured the M5 kept in contact with the runway at all times. Newman broke his existing record of 234km/h, set in a Jaguar in August 2003.
