A teenage student killed near Picton on Saturday was one of three reported fatalities on New Zealand roads during the weekend.
Police said Alick Roy Tapp, 17, died in a single vehicle crash at Koromiko, south of Picton on Saturday night and five other young people were left with injuries ranging from minor to critical. Another 17-year-old male was taken to Wellington Hospital with critical injuries, while the other injured occupants were aged between 16 and 18.
On Friday Tarun Naicker, 20, was killed when the car he was a passenger in crashed in the southbound lane of Auckland's southwestern motorway about 9.45pm. Police said three other occupants were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Investigations into the crash were continuing.
On Saturday an elderly woman died when the car she was driving rolled 50m down a gully in a remote part of the Bay of Islands.
Police northern communications Inspector Danny Meade said the car had failed to take a bend and rolled on Russell Rd in Whangaruru, north of Whangarei, about 2.50pm.
