KEY POINTS:
Christchurch teenager Jun Bouterey-Ishido played his way through a selection from Schubert, Brahms and Ravel to win New Zealand's premier event for pianists, the National Piano Competition, in Kerikeri last night.
His playing selection was "extraordinary", according to adjudicator and world pianist A-lister Ian Munro.
"He plays like he's been on this planet for 50 years. I'm running out of superlatives," Munro said. "He's got a bit to learn technically but musically there doesn't seem to be any hang-up between his brain and his fingers."
The young pianist has just completed a degree in piano performance at Canterbury University.
Ishido, studying under Peter Nagy and Judith Clark, receives the Richard Farrell first prize - New Zealand's most prestigious piano award - and $10,000 prizemoney from Munro, one of Australia's most distinguished and awarded musicians, who is also a successful composer.
