KEY POINTS:
A man was lucky to escape with minor injuries when this gyrocopter "dropped out of the sky" north of Auckland yesterday.
Matakana Volunteer Rural Fire Force chief Lance Cargill said the man, believed to be in his 60s, suffered only a bruised leg.
He walked away from the crash, off Takatu Rd on the Tawharanui Peninsula, shortly before 11am. "He lost control and landed in a paddock," Mr Cargill said. "He was quite lucky." Emergency services were called by a member of the public who saw the aircraft crash from nearby Warkworth.
A Civil Aviation Authority investigation is under way.
