Gun Masterton sawyer Faavae Sefo won the Salter Memorial single saw championship at the Rotorua A and P Show over the weekend, beating the world champion of the past four years, Jason Wynyard, in the process.
It was Sefo's first victory over Wynyard since 2003 and ended a run of four second places at Rotorua, the biggest woodchopping and sawing competition in the North Island.
Victory did not come easily, however, with Sefo and Wynyard, side by side going hammer and tongs right to the end. It took the video to separate them with Sefo being given the nod by three-hundredths of a second.
"Quite honestly I didn't know whether I had made it or not, there was no time to worry about what he [Wynyard] was doing", Sefo said. "You just give it everything you've got and hope for the best, that's all you can do."
Sefo combined with Feilding's Warren Riddle to win the single saw doubles championship and was fifth in the underhand chop.
