Phone lines down in Far North

Kaeo resident Clare called Newstalk ZB from her cellphone, after becoming frustrated at not being able to use the internet all day.

Clare says she soon realised it was a phone line issue, as she could not ring her server or nearby friends on a landline, or even call Telecom to report the fault. She says it is a big issue for many in the area who rely on the internet and phone lines to do business.

The problem appears to extend as far as Kaitaia, about 65 kilometres away.

Telecom spokesman Robin Kelly says they have identified a cut fibre somewhere near Kaeo and crews are now onsite to work out the problem. He expects services to be restored later today.
