Peugeot plans to take VW on at its own game when it launches the 207 Economique. Like the VW, the Peugeot uses aerodynamic and engine adjustments to cut fuel use and emissions.
Ride height is 5mm lower and an under tray smooths air flow beneath the car. There's a unique aerodynamic pack including deeper side extensions and streamlined wheel trim, the combination imparting a drag coefficient of 0.274 to the standard car's 0.3.
Peugeot has fitted an EGR heat exchanger to cool re-injected exhaust gas. It's also tuned the engine management software for the 1.6-litre diesel engine, which at 67kW produces eight more kilowatts than the VW.
That motor is mated to a modified five-speed manual transmission with a higher final drive ratio than standard, and Michelin low rolling resistance tyres are fitted.
Peugeot says the usual specification has not been neglected, with ABS brakes, four airbags and air conditioning all available. But there's also a gear shift indicator that tells an economy-minded driver when to change gear.
Get it right, and the car is capable of a 3.8l/100km thirst - matching VW's fuel-miser.
