Transport Minister Pete Hodgson has admitted half a billion dollars from petrol tax is directed into Government's consolidated fund every year.
The new five cent a litre fuel tax came into force yesterday, specifically to pay for roading schemes.
But the Government is under pressure to use more of the money it already collects from car and petrol taxes on the roads.
Mr Hodgson says it is a myth the Government is lining its own pockets with petrol tax money.
