Wairarapa senior men's bowls selector Dave Petersen was "frustrated but happy" at his team's second placing behind Manawatu in the inter-provincial tournament played in Gisborne last weekend.
Frustrated because his team came within two points of winning the event but happy at the way his players performed against quality opposition.
"We could have won, it was close but not close enough ,"Petersen said.
Wairarapa finished on 10 points thanks to two wins each to singles player Ian Monaghan and the triple of Graham Tindall, Brian Johnson and Peter McGillicuddy and one win to the pair of John Claydon and Les O'Donovan.
One of Monaghan's victories was over national representative Stephen Wood of Manawatu while Tindall's team also had a good win over Manawatu, beating a triple skipped by another national rep in Phil Skoglund jnr.
Manawatu won the tourney with 12 pts, followed by Wairarapa 10, Hawke's Bay 8 and Gisborne-East Coast 6.
The Wairarapa senior women's team finished fourth in their event with the women's development squad placing third and the men's development squad dropping from second going into the last round to fourth.
The inter-club zone finals saw Wairarapa's representatives, Martinborough men and Masterton women, both finish in fourth place.
