Wairarapa nosed out Wellington to win the senior men's section of the inter-provincial bowls tournament played at the Masterton Bowling Club's headquarters over the weekend.
The two sides finished with 12 points apiece and Wairarapa took the honours through securing the most ends, 89 to Wellington's 85.
Third on 10pts was Manawatu with Kapiti, which had earlier beaten Wairarapa in a representative fixture, trailing the field with 2pts.
His team's victory delighted Wairarapa selector Dave Petersen, who said all six players had risen to the occasion against formidable opposition.
"Their attitude was spot on, they really knuckled down and played some consistently good bowls," he said. "You couldn't fault them at all."
Feature of the Wairarapa performance was the three wins registered by the triple of Peter McGillicuddy, Graham Tindall and Laurie Field. They beat Manawatu 17-14, Kapiti 20-12 and Wellington 21-12.
Petersen said McGillicuddy at skip and Tindall at two revelled in the excellent start given by lead Laurie Field, who constantly peppered the jack in all three of their games. "He (Field) was outstanding, he showed just how crucial the performance of a lead can be," Petersen said.
The pair of John Claydon and Les O'Donovan kicked off with a 15-9 loss to Manawatu before beating Kapiti 21-10 and a Wellington pair skipped by reigning national pairs champion, Rob Ashton, by 16-11.
Ian Monaghan played the singles for Wairarapa and he played better than his one win, two loss record would suggest. He lost to Manawatu 18-21, beat Kapiti 21-16 and lost to a very much in-form Wellington player Kevin Rice 8-21.
There was a strong effort too from the Wairarapa men's development squad which finished second overall. They had 2-1 wins over Kapiti and Manawatu and went down by the same margin to the eventual winners of that section, Wellington.
Highlight for Wairarapa was the three wins registered by singles player Warren Fisher while the pair of Peter Walker and Clive Harper and the triple of John Harmon, John Patterson and Bruce Howe both finished with one win and two losses.
Selector Warren Wyeth said Fisher's consistency was the secret to his success. "He was always thereabouts. He had very few loose ends," he said.
The Wairarapa senior women's team had one of their best results in years when they placed second in their section while the development squad women's team was third. An individual high point in the senior fixture was the pairs win scored by Makaia Campbell and Frankie Lambert over a Manawatu pair skipped by international Sharon Sims.
