New Zealand First leader Winston Peters wants the Law and Order Select Committee to play hardball with the head of the Serious Fraud Office.
The SFO Chief Executive, David Bradshaw, is threatening to resign if he is forced by the Committee to hand over documents he claims back up his decision not to prosecute over the Magnum Winebox deal.
He is under increasing pressure by Committee members to produce legal advice from Crown Prosecutor Simon Moore, who advised that there was enough evidence to prosecute.
Mr Peters says the legal advice which Mr Bradshaw claims supports his stance is at odds with what the lawyer has told the Committee. He says ultimately the SFO boss cannot refuse to obey the committee and he will simply have to hand over the documents.
Mr Bradshaw says the committee is putting the work of the SFO at risk. He says he has been called a liar in Parliament and, if the criticism continues, he may consider quitting.
