Person in hospital with critical injuries after tractor accident near Taumarunui

A person has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being trapped in a tractor near Taringamotu, north of Taumarunui in the Ruapehu district.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Taringamotu Rd at 10.05am today.

The person has arrived at Waikato Hospital after being transported in an helicopter, a St John spokeswoman said.

"They are in a critical condition," she said.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand central district communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said the person was trapped but he did not know how the incident had happened.

A police spokeswoman said it was not clear if the tractor was on the road or private property but there was no mention of any other vehicles being involved.

"It appears the man was injured on or by the tractor itself," the spokeswoman said.
