Brave motorists freed a driver after his car rolled and burst into flames on State Highway 1 south of Christchurch this morning.
Police said reports were received around 9am of the crash at Dunsandel, near Parkins Rd, 40km south of Christchurch.
A people-mover had crashed into a ditch and rolled before catching fire.
Passers-by were able to free the driver and sole occupant before the car was engulfed in flames. The man, aged in his 60s, is being transferred to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.
It is not known yet whether he suffered injuries in the crash or has suffered a medical event.
No other vehicles were involved.
