A person has died after being hit by a passenger train in Palmerston North this evening.
The collision happened on No.1 Line near Longburn, police said. They were called around 7:30pm and are currently at the scene, where a person's body has been found on the tracks.
A Kiwirail spokeswoman said the train was the Capital Connection service from Wellington. The accident happened around 2km from Palmerston North.
"The incident occurred at 7.20pm near the Longburn Rongotea overbridge. There were 36 passengers on the train plus staff who were stopped at the site for just over an hour.
"The train is expected to shortly arrive at Palmerston North. Any further details on the incident should be sought from police."
