Two men were transported to hospital, he said.
One person was currently being treated with minor burns, a central ambulance communications spokeswoman said.
The fire was contained within the house and no other houses in the area were affected.
Te Pene Ave resident Paretai Rua, who lives across from the burning house said the house caught on fire "really fast".
"The whole thing went up in five minutes," she said.
She said a man in his 30s lived at the house and he tried to put the fire out with a hose.
"The kitchen engulfed in flames first. He couldn't do anything."
She said there was another person at the house at the time.
James Drummond, a neighbour living two doors from the burnt house, said he heard a loud bang and soon saw smoke and flames coming from the house.
"The fire moved very quickly."
Smoke could be seen and smelled from Porirua city, a few kilometres from the house.
