A CRACKING unbeaten century by Elizabeth Perry, pictured left, paved the way for Wairarapa's four wicket win over Manawatu in a senior women's representative cricket match played in Palmerston North on Sunday.
Perry, who will play for Wellington Blaze in the State national league this season, took advantage of a caught and bowled chance being dropped early in her innings
and plundered the Manawatu attack as her side chased 251 for victory, a target reached with just the one over to spare.
The power of Perry's stroke play is illustrated by the fact she struck 22 fours and making her effort all the more noteworthy was the fact she had just the one Wellington club match as preparation.
A busy hockey season was the main reason for her late start, a season which saw her play for New Zealand at age group level, selected as a member of the Black Sticks development squad and play a leading role in Wellington's national league success.
While Perry-who will attend Canterbury University next year-was very obviously the star act in a Wairarapa innings which reached 254-6 there were some other handy efforts as well.
Both openers Justine Robertson (19) and Anna Mahe (29) hit the ball well with Robertson hitting three boundaries and Mahe four, 14-year-old Jesse Bennett showed pleasing stickability in making 22 and Nicole Bouton, Wendy Hull and Courtney Liggins all lend Perry valuable support. The Wairarapa bowling effort was not so consistent with Manawatu benefitting from 39 wides. Wendy Hull led the way with 3-36 from her 10 overs-two of her wickets coming in her very first over- while Perry took 2-40, Adrienne Bain 2-34, Bennett 1-34 and Olivia Christie 1-25
