Central Districts representative Elizabeth Perry starred with ball and bat as Wairarapa scored an impressive seven wicket-win over Wellington secondary schools in a representative women's cricket match played at Wairarapa College yesterday.
Perry took 2-15 from 10 overs when Wellington batted first and completed their 50 overs with their score at a healthy 202-8, an excellent effort considering they were struggling at 72-6 at one stage.
Opener Emily Leslie batted right through the innings to be 44 not out and No.8 batswoman Melinda Hodgson made a rollicking 56 before being clean bowled by Perry. Her first six scoring shots were all fours and overall she struck nine fours and one six.
Wendy Hull with 2-32 from 10 overs gave Perry good support at the bowling crease for Wairarapa as did Courtney Liggins (2-23) and Pip Lynch, who didn't get a wicket but whose six overs went for only 26 runs.
The Wairarapa innings couldn't have got away to a worse start with the first wicket falling before a run had been scored but then came two fine partnerships, the first of between April Wilton and Taasha Henson producing 84 runs and the second of them between Henson and Perry being worth 116 runs.
Wilton hit nine fours in her 53, Perry 11 fours in her 72 and Henson two fours in her valuable 31 not out. The best of the Wellington bowlers was Olivia Bedford with 2-23.The size of the win was a major confidence boost for the Wairarapa squad all but two of whom are at secondary school.

BIDWELL CUP
Outright wins were the order of the day when matches in the Wairarapa Cricket Association's Bidwell Cup senior inter-club competition continued on Saturday.
Picking up maximum points were the Bracewell Academy XI, Lansdowne and Greytown and of the trio only Greytown had to bat twice before achieving that distinction.
The academy team were a class and more above a disappointing Red Star, winning
by an innings and 34 runs.
After making just 96 in their first innings in reply to the academy's 230-7 Red Star again struggled for runs in their second innings and were all out for 100.
Once again Ben Hundemark was impressive with the ball for the academy side,, building up good pace in taking 3-25 while Jackson chimed in with 3-17.
Lansdowne beat Rathkeale College by an innings and 44 runs.
A huge first innings total of 324-4, which included centuries to both openers Henry Cameron and Sam Curtis, set up the Lansdowne victory.
Rathkeale capitulated for only 95 in their first innings but showed greater resistance in their second knock which produced 185. Spearheading their batting effort there were Tim Lucas with 37 and Paul Lyttle with 33 while the most successful of the Lansdowne bowlers was veteran Chris Jefferies, who finished with 3-30.
Greytown led Wairarapa College by 113 runs on the first innings but were forced to bat again when the students scored a handy 186 in their second innings. Dane Buchanan (33), Jeremy Anderson (33) and Gareth Pottinger (35) led what was a spirited fightback. Bowling for Greytown, Josh Doherty took 4-47
Needing 74 runs for the outright win Greytown got home with six wickets to spare..
