KEY POINTS:
Emergency services including two helicopters are attending a serious crash on State Highway 1 south of Otaki in which people were trapped.
The crash involved at least two vehicles and fire crews have had to use cutting equipment to free people from the wreckages.
A fire service spokesperson said two people have already been cut out of one car, and they are using the jaws of life to try to free a person trapped in the other vehicle.
An ambulance spokesperson says they do not know the extent of the victims' injuries.
Police said the road was closed near Te Horo and traffic was being delayed.
