A pensioner was killed when his car plunged off Te Mata Peak in fog yesterday - but two walkers had a lucky escape when his car flew over their heads.
It was the second road fatality of the weekend - an Auckland man died in a Kawerau crash on Friday.
Havelock North pensioner Mervyn Carr, 72, was driving up Te Mata Peak Rd in fog about 9am yesterday when his car left the road, careering over the top of two people walking on a track below.
Carr was dead before emergency services arrived at the scene.
