Panuku's interim chief, John Dalzell, acknowledged the region's ongoing housing crisis. He said the new homes would help cater to the many families looking to buy a home.
"To cater for the record levels of growth across Auckland at present, it's important we first make the most of land we've got direct access to and manage on behalf of the Council," he said. "As outlined in the Auckland Plan, there's every reason to suggest intensive development done right has a strong role to play in the region's future."
The council had said the 2ha Link Crescent site was to be sold for housing development and feedback was sought from the more than 2000 residents in the area.
Up to 140 submissions were received and it is understood the majority of those were not in favour of selling the land.
Initial plans show the 59 homes to be built on the site will be a mix of non-detached and detached townhouses with two to four bedrooms each.
McConnell Property has been involved in developing residential, commercial and industrial sites.
In recent years the company has worked on sites including the new Addison housing project in Takanini, South Auckland, infrastructure at Beaumont Park in Rolleston, Christchurch, and at Titanium Park at Hamilton Airport.
