Wairarapa College were left rueing a 10-run penalty after their first innings loss to Academy in the Bidwell Cup senior men's inter-club cricket match played at Rathkeale College on Saturday.
In a match which saw two sizzling centuries from Fran Sennemore (Academy) and Robbie Anderson (Wairarapa College) the main talking point was the decision by umpires Chris Cogdale and David Lee to take 10 runs from the college's first innings tally after warnings to a batsman to stop running on the pitch had twice gone unheeded.
It was a penalty which made a telling difference to the end result as, without it, it would have been Wairarapa College who came away with the first innings points as their score of 214 was only six short of the 220 registered by Academy in their first innings a week earlier.
Major contributors for Wairarapa College were Sam Curtis (33), Robbie Anderson (35), Daniel Ingham (33) and Richard Irons (22).
Medium pacer Steve Coleman was the most successful of the Academy bowlers in taking 5-47.
To say Academy went on the attack in their second innings would be a gross understatement.
They were at the crease for less than 20 overs and rattled on an impressive 209-1.
Leading the charge was the consistent Fran Sennemore who belted no fewer than nine sixes in his 124 while Tudor Carr was equally aggressive in getting through to 70.
That left Wairarapa College 216 runs to get in 23 overs for the outright win and with Robbie Anderson in superb touch in making 103 and Richard Irons chiming in with 33 they got to 212-9, just four runs short of their target. Seven runs were needed of the last over for victory but they only managed three in what was an exciting finish to a memorable match.
No wonder Red Star were celebrating after their outright win over Greytown at Greytown. It was the first time they had beaten the southerners in an Bidwell Cup match since 1995-96 and they did it in style, winning by an innings and 280 runs.
Greytown required 322 runs in 50 overs for victory after Red Star declared their second innings closed at 250-8. Once again it was Brad Edwards who took the limelight with a well-made 68 while Troy Burling made 41, Jared Watt 46, Shey O'Gorman 21 and Camus Wyatt 20. Bowling for Greytown, Seth Rance took 4-55 from 14 overs and Kyle Williamson 2-50 from 11 overs.
Greytown's second innings was a complete disaster with the side being all out for just 42, more than half of which were made by Willie Tatham who came in at first drop and was 22 not out when the last wicket fell. Jared Watt completed a fine all-round performance for Red Star by taking 5-24 off 11.5 overs while Shey O'Gorman took 2-1 from 3 overs and Carwyn Caffell 1-7 off 9 overs.
Lansdowne also scored a big win in their Bidwell Cup match with Rathkeale College at Rathkeale with the victory being set up by their first innings score of 304-9. Brock Price made 86, Shane Coulsen 58 and Robin James 38 while Dean van Deventer claimed three wickets for Rathkeale and Jamie Holmes two.
Rathkeale College therefore needed to score 154 runs to make Lansdowne bat a second time and were all out for 141, thereby giving Lansdowne the outright win by an innings and 13 runs. Matt Dalley (21), Anton Ross (17) and Nick Pearson (16) all had handy knocks for Rathkeale while taking three wickets apiece for Lansdowne were Robin James and D.Gardner.
