KEY POINTS:
An Asian teenager has become the second pedestrian killed in Auckland in the past two weeks.
Yeung Yee, 18, of suburban Mt Roskill, died after being struck by a car yesterday at the busy intersection of Tamaki Drive and Patteson St in Mission Bay, on the Waitemata Harbour waterfront east of the city centre.
Sergeant Matt Ford, of the police serious crash unit, said early indications were that Ms Yeung was crossing Patteson St following a green cross signal when a car making a right turn into Patteson St from Tamaki Drive collided with her about 10.40am yesterday.
Ms Yeung was taken to Auckland Hospital, where she died between 4pm and 5pm.
"She was in a reasonably stable condition when she was taken to hospital but she went downhill rapidly," Mr Ford said.
He said police were still investigating the phasing of the lights to see whether the driver of the car had a green light.
Police had spoken to the driver of the car and were likely to speak to her again along with other witnesses, Mr Ford said.
He said Ms Yeung's family were on their way to New Zealand from China today.
Ms Yeung's death follows that of Rongfa Jiang, 53, who was hit on Dominion Road about 7.30am on April 16, apparently by a Stagecoach bus.
Mr Ford said another pedestrian death in Auckland was a reminder to both pedestrians and drivers.
"Pedestrians need to make sure they are aware of cars around them, and drivers need to keep an eye out for pedestrians, especially in heavy pedestrian areas."
