Pedestrian killed near Christchurch named

A young man killed when he was hit by a car near Christchurch early on Sunday morning has been named as Alex Leonard Knight, 19, of Prebbleton.

Mr Knight died after the crash on Birches Rd, Lincoln about 2am om Sunday.

Police said initial enquiries indicated he was hit when standing in the middle of the road after getting out of another vehicle he was a passenger in.

They were considering whether charges would be laid against the driver.

Mr Knight was one of two pedestrians to die over a holiday weekend in which seven people died on the roads.

Hastings woman Gail Annette Hansen, 67, was killed instantly after she was hit at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Higginson St in Otane about 6pm Saturday.

In a twist, the driver was community advocate Liz Graham, who lost her son on the same stretch of road in August last year.

Police had interviewed Ms Graham but were unsure whether charges would be laid.
