KEY POINTS:
Police are hunting a hit-and-run driver after a man was killed in Ashburton early today.
He was one of two pedestrians to die in the South Island overnight.
Police said the victim, in his 20s, was struck in Albert Street, Ashburton around 1am by a car which failed to stop.
He was found by a passing vehicle driver who called police and ambulance.
The man was taken to Ashburton Hospital where he died a short time later. Police said that they were still attempting to contact relatives of the dead man.
They also appealed for witnesses to come forward.
The second pedestrian was struck and killed by car in Gore shortly after midnight.
No further details were immediately available.
