A witness has described a man being flung several metres after a car allegedly ran a red light and ran into a pedestrian in Auckland's downtown waterfront area.
The victim was seriously injured on the intersection of Commerce and Quay St about 7pm yesterday.
"A car went through a red light and as it turned green for pedestrians the man was hit and then flung a good few metres and landed west of Quay St," witness David Peterson said.
"It was at the tail end of rush hour." About 10 people crowded around the injured pedestrian, and a man in a purple shirt directed traffic until emergency services arrived.
"The guy didn't seem to have much movement from his neck and below. I could see his lips moving," Peterson said.
