Pedestrian accident closes major Auckland road

A pedestrian is in a critical condition after being hit by a car near a busy roundabout in Auckland.

The pedestrian was crossing Mt Albert Road near the Royal Oak roundabout with another person when the pair were hit by a car about 4pm.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said both pedestrians were taken to Auckland City Hospital.

One person was in a critical condition and a second person was in a serious condition, he said.

The road was closed for about four hours while the scene was cleared.

The roundabout, which has five exits, has several major roads going through it, including Manukau and Mt Albert roads.
