Auckland rail services were disrupted at the height of last evening's travel peak while a train with faulty air brakes was emptied of passengers and shunted to a siding.
Veolia Transport customer services manager Nick Orange said the passengers were asked to disembark at Mt Eden at 5.55pm before another train arrived to shunt the disabled unit to the siding at Morningside.
The rescue train was also emptied of passengers at Mt Eden, where about 500 people were left waiting for about half an hour for the tracks to clear.
Two other trains were held up at Britomart and a third at Newmarket.
