Peak-hour traffic charge

Wellington Regional Council is considering charging motorists a congestion tax during peak-hour travel times.

A consultant's report says the system worked in other parts of the world and could be successful in Wellington.

Regional councillor Terry McDavitt says "road pricing" is now on the agenda for the region but any decision is at least five years away.

"Doing nothing is not an option."
