An Eketahuna dairy farmer who brawled with his brother was asked by a judge if the pair would "have a beer and shake hands".
Matthew David Thornton, 19, appeared in Masterton District Court earlier this week, for sentencing on a charge of common assault.
Police prosecutor Garry Wilson said that on September 8, just after 5.30pm, Thornton had been at a house in High St, Masterton. His brother and mother had arrived at the house.
An argument between the brothers began and escalated, with both throwing punches. Thornton was held back by a family member.
Police arrived and Thornton was released, he approached his brother, saying: "I don't care if the police are here."
