Paul Holmes in stable condition in hospital

Broadcaster Paul Holmes is expected to be back at work within weeks following hospital treatment for a long-term heart complaint.

The 61-year-old remains in a stable condition tonight after being flown to Auckland Hospital yesterday by helicopter from his home in Hawkes Bay.

Auckland DHB spokesman Mark Fenwick could not confirm whether Mr Holmes would need surgery.

Mr Holmes put out a statement this morning, saying he was in good spirits and was progressing satisfactorily.

"I have been admitted to Auckland City Hospital due to a specific heart condition and a particular development which needs to be halted. The procedure is significant but I am confident that we will get a good result."

Newstalk ZB station manager Dallas Gurney said Holmes would undergo a routine heart procedure, and was expected to return to work within weeks.

In January Mr Holmes was admitted to Hawke's Bay Hospital after falling ill at his home at Poukawa, near Hastings.

On that occasion, he recovered quickly and returned to work the following week.

Mr Holmes became a campaigner for prostate cancer awareness after beating the disease more than a decade ago.
