"I thought there's probably more than just me looking," she said.
Ms Finnegan said having her shop online allowed her to divide her time between teaching mathematics at Kuranui College, looking after her preschoolers and running the business.
"The flexibility of having it at home, that was the idea behind it, to give me flexible child care.
"I do all my shopping online, living in Featherston, and I think probably retail is going in that direction anyway."
Her socks are imported from places such as Stockholm in Sweden and Portland, Oregon.
"I get in touch with designers and manufacturers and build up relationships with them, so I'm their person in New Zealand that sells their socks.
"For some of the products I'm the only person that sells them in New Zealand."
She said her goals were to be the biggest online sock shop in New Zealand and to make it easy for people living outside big cities to have access to distinctive and interesting socks.
"It's for people who are interested in interesting, colourful and good quality socks. It's a range of good designs. It's really socks that I would like to wear myself."
She said she may think about manufacturing socks as well.
"When I started originally, I quite liked the idea of designing my own socks and I love the idea of [using] New Zealand merino and using the facilities in the Wairarapa."
Ms Finnegan said she had received a lot support and encouragement and had used local businesses to promote Goodsocks.
"I've had my logo designed by the graphic designers in Martinborough."
She also uses a Greytown printer and a Masterton-based courier company.
Her favourite pair of socks at the moment are a design called Madeline.
"It's a really beautiful pattern, it looks sort of like folklore design and they are over the knee, which is great for this time of the year."
