A father and son put out a blazing car fire after a collision near Taupo yesterday that killed one woman and injured seven others.
The crash happened between Tram Rd and Oruanui Rd at Wairakei, about 25km north of Taupo, at midday.
Neil Dodds, of the BayTrust Rescue Helicopter, said more people could have died had the fire in one of the cars not been quickly extinguished.
The woman killed was a 22-year-old overseas student, based in Auckland, who was a passenger in a car travelling north.
The driver of that vehicle was a 21-year-old overseas student from Auckland who was seriously injured.
