Tranz Rail is investigating why a head-on collision between two of its Tranz Metro trains occurred at Ellerslie in Auckland today.
At least two people suffered minor injuries in what Tranz Rail is calling a low-impact collision that happened just before midday, about 100m south of the Ellerslie station platform.
One man was taken to Auckland Hospital for observation after suffering a knock to his head. Another sufferred a minor leg injury.
Tranz Rail officials are at the scene trying to determine why a city-bound train carrying 35 passengers and a southbound train with no passengers collided on the same tracks.
Passengers caught in the collision were helped to the nearby Ellerslie railway station by police and transported to their destinations by taxis.
Northbound motorway traffic, which was partially blocked by police attending the accident, is now flowing freely.
