Three fishermen who had been drinking were rescued by a passenger ferry in Half Moon Bay, East Auckland, yesterday after the dinghy they were in sank under them.
A couple from a nearby marina alerted the crew of a Sealink ferry to people in the water screaming for help just before 6am yesterday. The trio were taken to Middlemore Hospital and paramedics said two men had serious injuries.
The men, who said they were fishing when their dinghy became waterlogged, were believed to be drunk.
Sealink general manager Todd Bolton said the rescue was difficult in the dark and the crew had to rely on the men's cries to locate them.
Skipper Tom Carter navigated the ferry alongside the men and they were hauled on board.
