A man was killed yesterday after a driver lost control of his car while overtaking at high speed, according to witnesses.
Eyewitnesses spotted the white Subaru Legacy speeding southbound on Great South Rd, Papatoetoe, then attempting to overtake another car before hitting the traffic light just after 8am. A passenger, in his early 20s, was killed. The driver, also in his early 20s, was slightly injured.
Local courier contractor Pritesh Lal was one of the first on the scene and said the driver was conscious but incoherent and appeared to be trapped.
"I didn't know what he was trying to say. I asked him if there was anyone else in the car and he said 'no'. Then I saw the other guy in the passenger seat ... he was lying flat and wasn't moving ... the scene was just horrific." Lal's mother Prem Lal said, 'It's just such a waste of life."
