A 35-year-old underwent surgery yesterday after being stabbed eight times when a Guy Fawkes party got out of hand.
Police were called to an address in Inch Clutha, about 100km south of Dunedin at 12.45am.
About 10 people were partying at a farmhouse when an argument developed.
A 29-year-old man from Kaitangata allegedly punched a woman, prompting her 35-year-old partner to come to her defence.
A fight broke out and the 29-year-old allegedly produced a small pocket knife. The 35-year-old man was stabbed once in the face and seven times in the upper torso.
The offender and the victim were taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance. All were last night understood to be in a stable condition.
The 29-year-old is expected to appear before Dunedin District Court tomorrow charged with causing grievous bodily harm. Police said further charges are likely.
