Two concrete lions stolen from an Auckland home were more than just "objects" to their owners - they were part of the family.
The 1m tall statues have stood proudly at the front door of the Clarke family's home for the past 40 years.
But when Jan Clarke arrived home on Monday night the statues were gone. She said she was horrified that someone had stolen them, because of the length of time they had been in her family.
Because of their weight she believes at least two people must have been involved and she is now appealing for anyone with information about their whereabouts to come forward.
Mrs Clarke and her husband bought the rare Italian-designed statues - of which only six were made in New Zealand - for their first home in Whakatane. They are estimated to be worth several hundred dollars each.
Since then they have moved with the family to each of their six subsequent homes, most recently in Botany Downs.
Mrs Clarke's daughter Averil said she remembered growing up with the lions always at the front door. She and her brother spent many happy hours playing on them.
She said the family would consider offering a small reward if that's what it took to get the lions back and urged the thieves to look at the wider picture.
Mrs Clarke said the theft had shaken her sense of security.
Counties Manukau police want anyone with information to phone (09) 261-1300 or crimestoppers on 0800-555- 111.
