KEY POINTS:
Parking wardens are being posted at school gates to prevent "bedlam" as parents pick up their children.
They will be stationed at 15 schools across Auckland City throughout this term.
At a further 28 schools, a "faxback" scheme is in place, where staff fax through details of illegally parked vehicles. The owner of the car is then sent a warning letter by the council's parking services team.
Councillor Richard Simpson said the scheme was successful in reducing the danger to children and improved traffic flow around schools during the afternoon rush.
"It can be bedlam at some schools when parents come to collect their children." Said Mr Simpson, who is chairman of the council's Transport and Urban Linkages Committee.
"Safety is our priority. Parking officers patrol outside schools during peak times, adopting a zero tolerance approach towards people who ignore the road rules.
"Double parking and parking on broken yellow lines, even for a couple of minutes, can create a safety risk for children."
Epsom Normal school was one of the schools targeted by council staff yesterday.
The council can also help set up walking school buses to encourage parents and children to get out of their cars.
Schools interested in joining any of these schemes can find out more by visiting www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/transport and selecting "road safety".
