An army Unimog diesel tanker rolled over and ended on its roof after it was parked beside a road.
Two New Zealand Army trainees crawled uninjured from the modified vehicle, which was carrying 3600 litres of fuel.
Sergeant Chris Megaw, of Masterton police, said the vehicle had pulled onto a sloping roadside verge on State Highway 2 near Mount Bruce at about lunchtime on Tuesday.
"They pulled over to fix some of the scrim material on the truck and the area they picked was on an incline and covered in slippery long grass. The vehicle was stationary and rolled sideways," he said.
