Work has begun in earnest to develop a children's theme park on the Remembrance Lake island in Queen Elizabeth Park in Masterton.
Gary Caffell, Masterton District councillor and chairman of the parks and open spaces task group (POST), said some trees had been removed from the island at the recommendation of an arborist and construction had started on pathways to play areas for children, including small huts and enhanced wetland ponds.
A working party, comprising Friends of the Park and Miniature Train Society representatives, archivist and historian Gareth Winter, POST group members and council officers, was meeting today to discuss timing and completion of elements in the theme park.
"It will be a staged project with the aim of creating an opportunity for the children to explore."
A nearby aviary was also in line for re-modelling as part of an overall revamp of the park.
