Work has started on the $70,000 asphalt pathway that will encircle the sports fields at Carrington Park in Carterton.
Brian McWilliams, Carterton District Council community facilities manager, said work started three weeks ago on the 2-metre wide path, which is expected to be finished in about three months.
He said the path, which Taskforce Green workers are helping to build, would encircle the entire sports field and was being laid inside an existing fitness trail tracing the perimeter.
Asphalt was chosen as a pathway surface because of its comparatively low cost, he said. Seats and lighting would also be part of the development.
"The walkway will give ease of travel to the elderly on mobility scooters and mothers with prams, and can be used by walkers and runners as well."
