The parents who broke their baby's arms before and after he was taken to Nelson Hospital were both jailed today. Nelson District Court Judge David McKegg jailed the baby's father for 10 years with a non-parole period of five years. The mother was jailed for six years and nine months.
The 25-year-old man and 19-year-old woman, who have name suppression, were found guilty by a district court jury last November on charges of assaulting the baby, relating to bruising on his pubic bone, and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, relating to two broken arms the baby suffered.
The father was also found guilty of a charge - which the mother had already admitted - of attempting to pervert the course of justice by inducing the woman's brother to make a false confession of causing grievous bodily harm to the baby.
