Two people charged with hiding the dead body of a child are due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday.
Detective Dave Checketts told Fairfax the case was historic, with the alleged offending happening in Oamaru in 2011.
Dunedin police began an investigation midway through last year, he said.
